'Graphic Novel'

When I first read recent news about a Twilight Graphic Novel, my first thought was of the three part prestige format mini series written by Howard Chaykin & illustrated by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez published by DC way back in 1990, rather than Alan Moore's aborted Twilight of the Superheroes which is often shortened to Twilight. But as it turns out Yen Press, an imprint of Hachette is adapting a series of novels published by Hachettes Little Brown Books imprint.

Deb Aoki has some preview images on her Manga Blog (so go there if you really want to see them) but looking at them, I can't help but be reminded about the Late Michael Jackson, who's life will be retold in a Manga by Brazilian artists Fabio Shin and Rafael Kirscher and written by Ledo Viera &  published by Brazilian publisher Seoman next year. But as Deb has already pointed out, Yen's Press release doesn't mention the term 'manga' or even 'manhwa' but I don't seem to recall them using these terms when the refer to Nightschool: the Weirn Books, Maximum Ride or even World of Quest.

While I'm not that bothered by Twilight at the moment as I find myself watching True Blood which replaces Dexter on FX. While I haven't been too enamoured with the portrayal of Vampires on television as they are often over simplified abbreviations of Bram Stokers Novel, but I haven't actually read his book, even though I've had a hardback edition since Francis Ford Coppola filmed his adaptation. But what really sets True Blood apart from the rest of the dross I'm not watching are the characters & the way they interract with each other.

I read tha he producer of the show found a copy of Dead Until Dark after signing a deal with HBO when he finished production of Six Feet Under. I might feel inclied to pick up a copy of the Sookie Stackhouse novel, like I did with Darkly Dreaming Dexter after seeing the first season of Dexter!!

You would be the third person in as many days that i have heard speaking very highly of true blood. HBO seems to turn out a very high standard of crop in the tv show department.

Its a show that could only be made by HBO due to onscreen nudity & bizarre sexual practices such as erotic asphyxiation. The fact that the show is set in an American Southern State somehow makes it fresh as US TV shows generally use actors with Calfornian accents while True Bloods actors speak with (to my untrained ear) Alabama & Cajun accents.

There's also the unusual concept that Vampire blood can be used by Junkies to get a fix. But how do they ingest it? Do they drink it, inject it or boil it into a powder & snort a line of it?!

Watched the first episode of it just now. Interesting as a direct result of the unusual slant it takes on the ideas. In everything i had heard about it, no one mentioned it was set in the deep south, I kind of had a mental picture of it as being in a big city. Without a doubt i would watch episode 2 of it, just on the fact ep 1 ended on such a cliff hanger, but it seems like it will be a pretty interesting exploration of the ideas, and it seems very character centric. Though i'm not sure what the dealio is with the blonde waitress from professor Xavier's school for gifted children.

When FX started airing trailers for the show, I wasn't particularly interested. I only watched it because the TV happened to be on that channel at the time & it seems completely different to the visuals they picked for the trailer. Virgin 1 have also got a Vampire TV show on their schedules, but when I saw the first trailer for Moonlight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_(TV_series)) I decided that I definitely wouldn't be watching it which gives me time to finish reading The Complete Chronicles of Conan by Robert E. Howard, or any number of things that would better utilise my time.

I may end up reading Dead Until Dark, the novel that is the basis for True Blood, but it'll have to wait until the end of the first series.
